I’ve read a plethora of books since I was a teenager. Classics, fantasy, horror, thriller, poetry books, whatever. I loved immersing myself in other worlds and stories, and found a mirror in a lot of the characters.
As a designer, I couldn’t help myself and had to make some book covers, not only to show the range (duh!) but mostly to pay homage to some of my favourites that are sitting on my shelf.
Everything below are my own ideas. No publishing house has commissioned these. It’s just pure concept and a little bit of hope that maybe one day some of my designs might reach your local book shop or library.
This is probably one of my favourite designs I’ve ever made. Partly because it’s The Odyssey - and because all of us, in our own way, Odysseus making our way through and towards something - but mostly because the concept joins past and present in a single object, through both touch and image.
The book itself is cloth-bound with a gold finish, an antique etching of Odysseus’s ship and comrades battling the winds loosed from Aeolus’s bag. That tactile, ornamented surface is the past. The present comes as a transparent acrylic case presenting a contemporary motif of the sea. One sits inside the other. This is, in fact, the core idea of the past that never leaves us. Instead it endures and it is cherished in the present.
